Michael J. Brennan

As a C0-PI, Prof. Brennan is responsible for the work package on nonlinear periodic structures. He supervises all aspects of this work package, including the development of a theoretical framework to facilitate the design and prediction of their dynamic behavior and the design, and manufacture and dynamic testing of prototype structures in the laboratory.

The technical challenge involves the union of two separate fields in structural dynamics, namely wave motion, which is predominantly linear, and the inclusion of nonlinear elements to improve the performance of an otherwise linear structure.

There is a substantial challenge in the development of a theoretical framework to handle this problem as there is scant literature on this topic worldwide and no previous research in this topic has been carried out in Brazil. Once the performance predictions have been completed, the challenge is then to design and manufacture practical prototype structures.

This is not a trivial exercise as it can be difficult to tailor nonlinear stiffness properties to achieve a specific objective, and at the same time minimizing the undesirable effects of nonlinearity.

Prof. Brennan has a wealth of experience in working on problems involving both linear wave motion and the design of nonlinear stiffness elements, and thus is uniquely placed to manage the work package. He will liaise with the international collaborators in the UK, Italy, China and New Zealand.
